About
The East Kolkata Wetlands: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As towns and cities
across the country struggle to manage their waste and sewage water,
the Kolkata approach provides a counter-example. Here the sewage
from the city is directed into the East Kolkata wetland area (a
Ramsar site). The sewage feeds a vast fishery industry which caters
to as much as one-third of Kolkota's fish consumption. While the
system is not without its problems, it is a striking example of what
is possible by harnessing nature's processes.

The scale of the task
to clean up Indian rivers is shown by the above photo of the Yamuna
at Agra. This was taken during the Yamuna Trash Cleanup program in
Delhi and Agra in March 2008. About 2000 Kgs of trash were collected
by 400 volunteers on a area of 3000 sq. feet.
