The Environmental Information System Centre, Department of Environment has prepared groundwater quality maps of Tamil Nadu. Water is considered to be hard when it contains high level of dissolved minerals. This may be of natural occurrence or due to human activities such as industrialisation leading to water pollution.

This collection of environmental maps shows the details of following minerals present in water: fluoride, chloride, iron, nitrate and salinity in Tamil Nadu.

These maps can be used for identifying the source of groundwater resources along with its quality in the state. These maps are intended as source of information for researchers, practitioners, NGOs, government bodies, project sponsors on land use decision making, conservation and environmental assessment.
